Other Programs

Monthly Art Making Workshops for adults and children have been offered at Moody Mansion while GAC rebuilds. Classes are held one Saturday per month, open to children from ages 6 to 14 in the mornings, and adults in the afternoons. Recent classes have included copper enamel jewelry making, Mardi Gras mask decorating, fundamentals of oil painting, and more.

Summer Art Classes for Children were held for 10 consecutive Fridays during the summer of 2009. Open to children between the ages of 6 to 14, the weekly classes were hosted in the kitchen facility at Moody Mansion. Participants were introduced to a different technique or medium each class. Classes were led by practicing artists from Galveston.

Galveston Island Family Crisis Center, a division of The Children’s Center, Inc., allows homeless parents to avoid separation from their children during the crisis of homelessness, and provides shelter for older homeless youth ages 18 to 21. In addition to emergency shelter, they provide food, clothing and supportive services that include counseling and parent education. GAC’s program offers resident children some much needed one-on-one attention and a positive environment that encourages creative expression and exposure to new ideas. Classes also provide parents with ideas on how to incorporate art into their own households.

Rosenberg Library Summer Reading Program
Working in collaboration with the Rosenberg Library, GAC provides an artist instructor to conduct weekly art workshops at the library in conjunction with their summer reading program aimed at children between 4 and 12 years old. Recent projects such as creating treasure maps tied into the library’s theme, “Sail Away with Books.”

ArtWalk In October 2007, GAC hosted the Elizabeth Eckel Art for All ArtWalk opening reception and exhibition in the studio classroom. The program was named in honor of the daughter of longtime GAC board member and patrons, Susan and John Eckel, following her death in 2003. Art work by both children and adults participating in all of GAC’s educational programs was on view in the first of what will become an annual exhibition event at the Galveston Arts Center, allowing participants the experience of having their work exhibited in a professional museum environment. Kid-friendly refreshments were offered and children had the opportunity to introduce their families to their art instructors.
