THIS JUST IN!...The artists have been selected to exhibit in the second ever Texas Juried Glass 2!
This is the second juried event held in Texas that focuses specifically on the use of glass as an artist's medium. Selected artists include: Ellen Abbott and Marc Leva, Brad Abrams, Jennifer Barnds, Jim Bowman, Shannon Brunskill, Constance Chantilis, Michael Crowder, Cathy Cunningham, David Graeve, Maki Hajikano, Jan Arthur Harrell , Kevin Ivey, Judy Jensen, Rachel F. Kalisky, David Keens, Jason Lawson, Debbie LeBlanc, Peter Mangan, Michael McDougal, Richard Moiel and Katerine Poppel, Julie Richey, Jacob "Luken" Sheafe, Josh Simpson, Gail Stouffer, Rose Lee Wilger, Leigh Taylor Wyatt and Brian Zody. TJG2 opens during ArtWalk on July 14th. Winners of the prizes will be announced during the evenign reception! The exhibition continues through August 19, 2007.
The Galveston Arts Center Announces its new Executive Director. Please join us as we welcome Alexandra Irvine as our new Executive Director effective May 1, 2007.
Irvine states, “I am thrilled to be joining the Galveston Arts Center and the Galveston community at large. I look forward to the opportunity of increasing awareness of the Center’s superb selection of exhibitions and programs.” Clint Willour, interim Executive Director/Curator of the GAC says, “We are delighted to have Alex joining our staff. I have known her for most of her professional career and am eager to have her take over the leadership of the organization.”

The Galveston Arts Center is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a Save America's Treasures grant in the amount of $250,000 funded by The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) and the National Park Service
The Save America’s Treasure’s initiative funds the preservation of the nation’s most significant endangered intellectual and cultural artifacts, historic structures and historic sites. The PCAH and the NPS oversee the program in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities(NEH) and Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The Galveston Arts Center applied for the funding to begin the restoration and repair of its home for over thirty years, the 1878 First National Bank Building. The building on the corner of 22nd and Strand was the first national bank in Texas operating under the National Bank Act of 1863 and the second chartered bank in the state.

The Galveston Arts Center is pleased to announce the opening of Remembering Robin Utterback during ArtWalk, Saturday, November 24, 2007, 6 - 9 pm.
Borrowing work from both public and private collections, the exhibition celebrates the life and career of an artist who was an integral part of the Houston art scene for more than 30 years.

GALVESTON ARTS CENTER ANNOUNCES PRIZE WINNERS IN GLASS EXHIBITION!
At a reception honoring the artists at the Arts Center on July 14, 2006, Houston-based artist David Graeve was awarded the first place Ryan/Davis Prize of $1,500 for his piece titled The Contradiction—Facts of the 20th Century—Birthday, 2007. Second place went to Jennifer Barnds’ work Eve VII, and third place was awarded to Cupido by Leigh Taylor Wyatt. The jurors presented awards of merit to Ellen Abbot and Marc Leva, and Jacob “Luken” Sheafe. A curator’s award of merit was given to Judy Jensen and Debbie LeBlanc.

Join the Galveston Arts Center for ArtWalk on Saturday, January 27, from 6 - 9 pm. The GAC opens two exhibitions, A Way with Words which features Texas artists who employ text in their works and Book Works featuring artists who use books as components in their work. The exhibitions continue until March 11, 2007.

Galveston Arts Center presents Al Souza: Addenda
The GAC is pleased to present Al Souza - Addenda: A survey exhibition of works from Houston artist, Al Souza. Features his well-known puzzle piece paintings and cut paper pieces. The exhibition, curated by Clint Willour, will travel and be accompanied by a catalogue. Souza and Willour are both being honored by the Art League of Houston this fall.
